US$20 Double Eagle Gold Coin

US_Double_Eagle_Gold_CoinThis is a US$20 Gold Liberty Head coin, also known as Double Eagle.

This double eagle has a long history, tracing back to 1849. There are 3 types of Liberty Head

1849-1866 (Type I)
1866-1876 (Type II)
1877-1907 (Type III).

The next change of design came in 1907. So, for the US $20 Gold coin, there are two major design types. One was the Liberty Head double eagle, and the other was the Saint-Gaudens. The Liberty Head, or Double Eagle was designed by James Longacre. The design continued until until 1907.

The new design was created by the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens from from 1907 to 1933. Thus the name - Saint Gaudens

US$20 Gold Coin Liberty DollarPersonally, I like the Saint Gaudens. I had the chance to buy a 1908 Saint Gaudens in MINT condition for US$450 back in 2004. I told the dealer I'll think about it. Well, that was in 2004 and I have regretted ever since then for not buying it. Still feel kind of sore when I think about it. Moral of the story, grab the opportunity when it presents itself.

Anyway, the word “double” actually describes its value $20, which was double the $10 eagle. The other gold coins denomination were the half eagle which was worth $5 and the quarter eagle was worth $2.50. The $20 dollars gold coin was the largest U.S. coin until the time of the California gold rush was a $10 face value gold Eagle.

Double Eagle Gold Coin

This Double Eagle is an interesting piece of history because it traced back to the gold discoveries in Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and Alaska which caused millions of ounces of gold to be minted at the U.S. Mints into these beautiful large double eagles.

The Gold double eagles represents the wealth born of the Old West gold mining days. The double eagle gold coin actually symbolized the riches of the United States in
the second half of the 1800s.

What I have here is a common date but in MINT condition.

Rare dates for example are the 1854-O and 1856-O New Orleans double eagles, which has an estimate of perhaps 20 to 30 each in existence.
Prices are beyond reach for most collectors. These are mostly collected by weathy people who may be diversifying their portfolio. The other is the
1861 Philadelphia Paquet, which only two are known. Price range = millions.

And of course the 1993 Saint Gaudens.
